Houston se torna maior cidade americana a ter prefeita abertamente gay

A maior cidade do Texas, Houston, se tornou a primeira metrópole americana a eleger uma prefeita abertamente homossexual, com a vitória da democrata Annise Parker em eleições realizadas no sábado.
A vitória de Parker, que ela mesma descreveu como “uma porta para a história”, é um passo simbólico para grupos que defendem os direitos sexuais de minorias nos Estados Unidos.

“Os eleitores de Houston abriram uma porta para a história. Sei o que significa esta vitória para muitos de nós que nunca acreditaram que poderíamos alcançar um posto tão alto”, declarou a prefeita eleita, de 53 anos.

Segundo o diário Houston Chronicle, Parker, que se lançou na vida pública militando pelos direitos dos homossexuais nos anos 1980, venceu estas eleições com base em uma “plataforma austera”, de gastos contidos, capaz de convencer os eleitores de que ela é a melhor opção em tempos de crise.

A candidata obteve 53% dos votos, contra 47% do ex-procurador da cidade Gene Locke, de origem afroamericana, representante da elite financeira de Houston. Parker tomará posse no dia 1º de janeiro de 2010.

Ao reconhecer a derrota, Locke deu os parabéns à vencedora e disse que está disposto a “trabalhar em conjunto” com a futura prefeita.

Segundo correspondentes, a vitória de Parker reforça a luta pelos direitos dos homossexuais nos EUA, que sofreram reveses nos Estados da Califórnia, na costa oeste, e Maine, na chamada Nova Inglaterra, na costa leste.

Em um referendo realizado em novembro em Maine, eleitores aprovaram a revogação de uma lei que permitia o casamento entre pessoas do mesmo sexo, que estava permitido desde o início do ano.

Já a Califórnia proibiu no ano passado os casamentos entre homossexuais.

Embora Houston não seja a única cidade americana a ter um prefeito abertamente gay, a metrópole de dois milhões de habitantes, quarta maior dos EUA, é a mais significativa.

Bastiões democratas no Texas, tanto Houston quanto a capital texana, Austin, destoam politicamente do restante do Estado, onde existe uma inclinação para o conservador partido Republicano.
