Colômbia vai enviar 2.500 homens à região de confronto com as Farc

BOGOTÁ - O governo colombiano enviará 2.500 homens para o sudoeste do país, região na qual nove militares foram mortos na última terça-feira em confrontos com as Forças Armadas Revolucionárias da Colômbia (FARC). O envio de tropas é um dos 14 itens de um plano de combate à organização elaborado por um conselho de segurança chefiado pelo ministro da Defesa, Gabriel Silva, e pelos principais comandantes das Forças Armadas.Entre as medidas está o pagamento de uma recompensa de até dois bilhões de pesos (cerca de US$ 1 milhão) pela captura dos dois mais importantes chefes das FARC na região, Miguel Ángel Pascua Santos, conhecido como "Sargento Pascua", e Édgar López Gómez, o "Pacho Chino". Além disso, haverá a criação de 12 batalhões de soldados provenientes da zona rural; a instalação de forças especiais urbanas nos municípios de Corinto (onde aconteceu o confronto de terça-feira), Toribio e Caloto; a instituição do Comando Conjunto do Pacífico, que reunirá forças do Exército, da Marinha e da Aeronáutica. Outro item da lista determina a fundação de um Centro de Coordenação de Ação Integral, similar ao já criado na localidade de Macarena, no centro-sul do país, uma região antigamente dominada pelas FARC e na qual o governo se impôs através de programas voltados à comunidade.

Vários analistas concordam em dizer que a região sudoeste do país, palco do ataque de terça-feira, é uma zona estratégica porque faz parte de um corredor, localizado no Cañon de Las Hermosas, que dá mobilidade às Farc no caminho entre as regiões sul e central da Colômbia.
Em termos de baixas em combates com a guerrilha, o confronto que resultou na morte dos nove militares foi o pior revés do ano para o governo de Álvaro Uribe.

In terms of casualties in fighting with the guerrillas, the confrontation that resulted in the deaths of nine soldiers was the worst setback of the year for the government of Álvaro Uribe.
