Obama elogia heroísmo em base militar de Fort Hood

O presidente dos Estados Unidos, Barack Obama, elogiou o heroísmo de soldados e civis na resposta ao ataque contra a base militar de Fort Hood, no Texas, que deixou 13 pessoas mortas e cercas de 30 feridos na quinta-feira.

Em seu discurso semanal, Obama disse que apesar de o ataque mostrar “o pior da natureza humana”, ele também provocou uma resposta com o “que há de melhor nos Estados Unidos”.
O major Nidal Malik Hasan, muçulmano de origem palestina nascido e criado nos Estados Unidos, abriu fogo contra um grupo de militares e civis em Fort Hood, na quinta-feira à tarde.
O psiquiatra de 39 anos de idade levou quatro tiros e permanece em coma, em um hospital militar.
Na sexta-feira à noite, centenas de pessoas realizaram uma vigília à luz de velas no estádio do complexo militar, em memória das vítimas.
Ataque devastador
Obama disse que o ataque foi “um dos mais devastadores já cometidos contra uma base militar americana”.
Mas, disse ele, “nós vimos soldados e civis correndo para ajudar os companheiros caídos; rasgando suas roupas para tratar os feridos; usando blusas como torniquetes; dominando o responsável pelo ataque mesmo quando estavam feridos”.
“Não temos como entender completamente o que leva um homem a fazer uma coisa dessas. Mas o que sabemos é que nossos pensamentos estão com cada um dos homens e mulheres feridos em Fort Hood.”
Temendo uma possível reação contra os muçulmanos nas Forças Armada, o presidente ainda destacou a natureza multicultural do exército americano.
“Eles são americanos de todas as raças, religiões e situações. Eles são cristãos e muçulmanos, judeus e hindus e agnósticos. Eles são descendentes de imigrantes e imigrantes eles mesmos. Eles refletem a diversidade que faz os Nossos Estados Unidos.”
